ERS - Department of Earth Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences
at the University of Maine!

Bryand Global Sciences Center BuildingEarth Sciences is the most multidisciplinary of the natural sciences. Our understanding of the Earth and other planets is based on research across the broad spectrum of Earth Sciences including Geodynamics and Crustal studies, Glacial and Climate studies, Anthropology, Paleoecology, Earth Systems, Marine Geology and Environmental Geology. We focus on particular aspects of the earth including its internal structure and evolution, the behavior and properties of rocks and minerals, the occurence of oil, gas and other natural resources, the effects of natural hazards on humans and the landscape, Earth history as recorded in rocks and fossils, the origin of life, and global climate change. We pursue our research both in the field and in well-equiped laboratories, and we draw on the expertise of neighboring research groups including the Climate Change Institute (CCI) and the School of Marine Sciences (SMS), and the George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental and Watershed Research. .
