Microstructure modeling

This Elle/basil movie, which runs to a shear strain of approximately 2.5, shows the evolution of a simple shear zone in a layer that contains some weak minerals ("mica" again) in a matrix of quartz. The color is incremental strain - dark blue is low and red is high. The incremental strain is calculated for each grain during each deformation step. The c-axes of the quartz grains were randomized prior to the onset of deformation, so there is a range of strength for these grains that is determined by their crystallographic orientation relative to the principal directions of strain. Notice that some of the quartz grains actually undergo subgrain recrystallization, dividing into a number of smaller grains. if you want to see a very clean, large, 40 MB version, go here.
