This movie, which runs to a shear strain of approximately 2.5, shows the evolution of a simple shear zone in a layer that contains some weak minerals ("mica" again). This was done using Elle. The movie shows how important competency (viscosity in this case) contrasts at the grain scale can be in localizing and establishing shear zones. Notice in these Elle movies that the matrix grains are changing shape and size? This is Elle at work simulating grain growth and grain boundary migration.
