Glacier education

HOME lesson plans science articles  photographs resources

Students make a "flubber" glacier using glue, water and detergent and construct a glacier valley using plastic sheeting.  Flubber behaves inmechanically similar ways to glacier ice, undergoing plastic deformation at low stresses and brittle failure at high stresses. Students are encourage to run several tests with diferent values for valley slope, glacier mass, temperature, and basal conditions.
the classroom exercise can be used in grade schools, high schools, and even college classrooms.

flubber recipe
mix #1 mix #2
1 cup white glue 1/2 cup warm water
3/4 cup warm water 2 tsp borax
food coloring

   1. combine the ingredients in "mix #1"

   2. combine the ingredients in "mix #2"
   3. pour mix #2 into mix #1 and knead with you hands
   4. flubber can last for months if stored in an air-tight container
